BWS Pedagogy

Our pedagogy at Bishop Wood is the shared, consistent way we teach so that every pupil learns, remembers, and can apply what they know. Through engaging content and research-based pedagogy, we create learning that is memorable, underpinned by Daniel Willingham’s simple model of memory: what pupils think about is what they remember. This shapes lesson design so that pupils’ attention is consistently directed towards the most important ideas, vocabulary and processes, with clear explanations, carefully chosen examples and purposeful activities that require meaningful thinking about the core content.
Across the curriculum, subjects are carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills build over time through a spiral approach, revisiting key concepts with increasing depth and challenge. Lessons use cognitive science techniques such as retrieval practice, guided and independent practice, and generative learning tasks to strengthen long-term memory and deepen understanding. This ensures all pupils can access and master essential content, supported by well-trained staff who complement high-quality teaching and ongoing professional development aligned to school priorities.
